Blue Dogs, White House, and House Leadership Strike a Deal

by mcjoan

CNN and The Hill are reporting that House leadership and the White House struck a deal with Energy and Commerce Blue Dogs to allow for E&C mark-up to continue:

In exchange for putting off a floor vote until after Labor Day, the Energy and Commerce Committee may be allowed to continue its markup of the healthcare bill this week even if an agreement has not been reached between committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and seven Energy and Commerce Blue Dogs over the content of the bill.

Asked if House leaders had told Democrats that there will be no House vote on healthcare before Friday, Blue Dog Co-Chairwoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) said, "I don’t think [leaders have] made public statements to that regard, but my understanding is that that would be part of an agreement, if they actually do move forward with an Energy and Commerce markup, that there will be no vote on the House floor until after Labor Day." House Dem's Placebo Healthcare Reform

By Rob Kall, Op-Ed News.com

When docs prescribe a placebo, they expect the gullible patient to believe it will work and that the symptoms will go away, especially if the symptoms have been psychologically caused or exacerbated. MATT WUERKER: HIS PERSONAL FAVORITES

"In the OpEd world a lot of very serious things
get discussed. I find that illustrations that use
levity and humor have a better chance of
breaking through all the heat and ire. I'm
drawn to images and metaphors that bring
a little playfulness to the table, without
trivializing things."-Matt Wuerker

JENNIFER KOHNKE: HER PERSONAL FAVORITES

Torture: this is my image to convey US torture at Guantanimo Bay under the Bush administration.

Democrats Beating up the Republicans: OK. I'm a liberal, and I was very happy when the Democrats had their landslide victory in the 2004 election.

Bush Regime: this is my favorite of my many portraits of Bush.

OctoMom: I think the octomom jokes are finally fading.

TLC: This is my image of how we need to handle the earth with a lot more care.

Tick Tock: I'm a native Chicagoan, and this is my illustration of the Marshall Fields Clock in Chicago. No comparison to Norman Rockwell's painting, but I made a valiant effort?

My relatives all recognized him: this is a Memorial Day tribune to the WWII vets . . . and a portrait of my Dad, circa 1942.

Studs Terkel: author, historian, actor, broadcaster, Pulitzer Prize winner. We lost a great man when Studs passed.
